I got an eeepc!

Hi everyone!

For my graduation, a friend of mine, gave me an eeepc4G as a gift! This EXTREMELY small netbook worked flawlessly, but the original xandros was nothing more than a cell phone OS, i couldn’t stand it. So i decided to use something else.

A couple months ago, what was available was only a puppylinux derivative and debianeee, but debianeee requested me to iron out the old xandros and i was not yet ready for that. So i bought a nice SDHC 8Gb and installed puppy in there.

Puppy worked great, fast, responsive, optimized for eeepc, however i didn’t like quite a few stuff:

first of all, the webcam was not working, nor was the internal mic.

second, puppylinux has quite a narrow repo of software and is maintained randomly, so when amsn moved to 0.97.2 it took around 4 weeks before they upgraded, in the meanwhile i was with no connection to msn.

third, im a debian user, puppylinux was totally different for me, no /etc/init.d/ssh start or such…odd..

So i waited, waited, till elive started to release version compatible with the eeepc. I used the eeepc quite good with 1.8.4, and 1.8.6. It was almost 100% optimized, suspend worked, the webcam too, the mic too, and it was DEBIAN! i could install whatever i wanted, no need to compile anymore, no need to ask someone to build me a package…

But exalt, exalt is the daemon which controls wifi and ethernet in E17, was pure crap…It didn’t show correctly the wireless info, it was unstable, froze, didn’t tell me which AP was encrypted and which one was not..UNUSABLE.

So i switched to wicd, but damn it, it was full of bugs, and i had to move to wifi-wiz. Wifi-wiz worked fine, the interface being a bit old, but still usable. I passed all the summer holiday with the eeepc, connecting with wifi-wiz.

Then elive decided to move to network-manager and back to wicd, after some bugs were fixed, it worked flawlessly for me, but gave strange problems to other ones, so the decision was taken, back to exalt…

At now, elive  is  seeking an alternative  to  exalt, an hybrid which would let ppl connect, at the moment exalt module refuses to even start, is no longer maintained, in short is deprecated..

Wicd instead is still around, but still seems quite buggy…

I really hope that someone in elive builds a network-interface that is working good…is not really nice to have a nice OS which can’t connect unless u go cli..
